Our View: Climate: There’s room for improvement
According to CBS News, millions of people around the world walked out of school and work to participate in the Global Climate Strike on Friday.
We realize that corporations play a massive role in contributing to the continual devastation of climate change. However, there are several ways for the average citizen to get involved in the fight against climate change, starting with calling out the administration.
Here are the top five things that we believe people can do to get involved even on the local level.
Talk about it
Advocacy is the first step for change. Talking about climate change and giving a voice to the problem shows people that it’s something we care about. Talking about the problem can also generate more discussions and conversations, potentially getting more people on board.
Vote
We need to elect officials that also believe in climate change and want to take action against it. Without those people in office, the chances of big change coming about are slim. Make sure you’re registered to vote. National Voter Registration Day is Sept. 24.
Educate yourself
It’s important to know what’s going on in the world. Do some research and learn about what’s going on, what climate change is and who you can vote for or support that is working against climate change. By educating yourself, you can help educate others and spread the word.
Shop smarter
Buying sustainable products and buying from brands that support the fight against climate change can help the cause. For example, bringing reusable bags to the grocery store can reduce the amount of plastic waste dumped into the ocean every year.
Eat a more plant-based diet
Livestock, such as cows, are big contributors to contaminating the atmosphere because they give off methane gas. Reducing your meat consumption and trying to eat more plant-based proteins and avoiding excess packaged and processed foods can help the cause.
