Kent State University women’s field hockey (5-5) beat Ohio University (4-3) on Saturday at home by a final score of 5-1. 

This was the Flashes’ first Mid-American Conference game of the season.

“This win was really big and we talked all week about not wanting this to be a close game,” coach Kyle Desandes-Moyer said. 

Kent State’s first two goals came in the first period and were scored by sophomore forward Luisa Knapp and junior back/midfielder Clara Rodriguez Seto. The third goal was scored by sophomore forward Knapp in the second period and the team’s last two goals came in the fourth period and were scored by sophomore forward Sydney Carr and junior midfielder/back Ashley Bonetz.

“We wanted to come out and make a statement win and scoring five goals on 28 shots is a statement,” Desandes-Moyer said.

The Flashes had 15 penalty corner opportunities on the afternoon, but were only able to score on two attempts.

“We scored on two penalty corners,” Desandes-Moyer said. “It’s something that we are definitely working on and are continuing to do in practice to make sure we improve on those.”

Kent used two goalies during the game. Senior Mary Crumlish played the first half of the game and gave up one goal on three shots faced. Junior Azure Fernsler played the second half and did not allow a single goal on seven shots faced and recorded five saves.

“Our plan was to have both of them play because they are both playing very well and this was a great opportunity for both of them,” Desandes-Moyer said. 

The Flashes’ next game will be a MAC matchup on the road on Friday against Ball State University (3-7) at 3 p.m.
